Boating on Midnight Lake

Sunset on Umbagog Lake
Suspended on a satin hush,
stars above and stars below.
Sheen of sapphires dark and lush
rippling in the quiet flow.

Treetops fade
into the stars.
Moonlight arrayed
in silver bars.

Silence prehistoric,
I hear my thought.
Loneliness euphoric,
so long I sought.

Serenity before the birth
of when, or where, or why;
Am I floating on the Earth
or drifting in the sky?

At last the path to camp I take
and turn my boat to shore.
May peace dwell on Midnight Lake
now and forevermore.
